and now we are watching.

Our gazes intersect through Google's eagle eye,

behind these gazes, we are both different and the same —

opposing poles of the power machine,

yet equally its interchangeable components.

The deliberately erased faces become ghosts of the digital world,

fuel for constructing the other,

yet also the very essence of reality in the real world.

Reality is torn apart within the operation of the power machine,

reality reveals the fractures within the machine itself.

As the machine turns its gaze back upon its own broken remnants,

we peer through the cracks of reality,

endlessly positioning ourselves within the power dynamics of the image.

Where language fractures, nothing remains.

In the symbolic world of language and the perceptual world of appearances, the interplay between signifier and signified erodes meaning itself. The more I construct intricate logical loops through lines of code to recreate the imagery my heart longs for, the more fragmented and meaningless the code's feedback becomes.

In the ceaseless process of questioning the answers I seek about existence and its relationship to reality, I trap myself in a shattered labyrinth of meaning and representation. Layer upon layer of complex code computations entangle and contradict each other, as symbols and numbers engage in endless cycles of mutual affirmation and negation. Each layer of representation simultaneously constructs and deconstructs other layers. The code and its visual outputs, through representation and symbolization, dissolve one another at the boundary between perception and the imperceptible—until all that remains is ruin, a trace image interwoven with immateriality.

Amid the ceaseless interplay of residue and rupture, I glimpse a fissure, within which lies the meaninglessness inherent in the pursuit of meaning. It is also the landscape we are destined to become.

The operational system of the ID (Identity Documentation) enables one to be seen, to be recorded by society, and to see oneself.

The intersection of my gaze with the image is where the system of identity fractures.

From this fractured point, we can question:

the dogmatic rigidity of norms,

the fragility of truth,

and the blurred boundaries of humanity.

Between seeing and being seen is an entangled interrelation, where the flow of gazes deviates within the supposed authenticity of the image and form. In the uncanny convergence of gazes, the fragility of society and the fragmented reality of existence emerge,surfacing from the evidence of identity.

The materialization of identity becomes a tool for discipline. Temporal and spatial constraints make human existence appear self-evident, yet the ruptures in this materiality are strikingly apparent, even manifesting on its surface. This artist book functions as a snapshot machine for identity, automatically mapping the fractures between identity and existence, situated in the space between seeing and being seen.

Using the format of ID Photo Booth , this work constructs a space of disempowered identity perception within a "normal" society. As the most fundamental object of identity verification, ID photos serve to standardize, constrain, and visually control individuals. The image itself becomes a site of depersonalized discipline, delineating the boundaries of power. Through this piece, I delve into the cracks within the system where vision and power intersect, photographing ID portraits for subjects with ambiguous identities.

The past image summons the first mirror,

Endless self-portraits form the second,

The Velveteen Rabbit reflects the third.

Light and gaze intertwine,

reflecting within the mirrors.

The light softens,

thread by thread,

becoming cotton,

stitching the wounds closed.

It's a project about confrontation,confession,and negotiation

It's a gift I receive in 2004, It shares all my moments of sorrow and watches me as I fall asleep. Yet, it seemsthat I bring it endless suffering in return. On January 29, 2024m after clumsily mending the fabric on its nose that had originally frayed outward, I began observing the changes on its body that I overlooked before - the traces of time accumulated and my own relfection in its eyes.

Through daily self-portraits with it, I documented my ongoing negotiation with myself, repairing its other cracks and removing excess threads. On the 178th day, after cutting the last remaining strands from its belly, I realized that what I had been capturing all along were, in fact, self-portraits of myself.

This book is structured in two parts, forming two narratives in a Z-shape. The first part is a dialogue between my past and present self, summoned through old photos of my bear and me as a child. The second part gives voice to the bear through the story of 《The Velveteen Rabbit. Each page is connected by a daily self-portrait, and over 178 days of capturing our face-to-face moments, you'll start to notice - it gets mended gradually and so do I.
